Busses, Children and Stairs

It’s fair to say that I have fairly little experience with children. I am obviously not a parent, and don’t see my young nephews or niece nearly as much as I would like. However, I have to say something happened earlier today that I found appalling. I was on a bus again, heading out to Dartford. A young woman got on pushing a pram and leading a young boy by his hand. She can’t have been more than 25, and the boy was about three. To my absolute horror though, she let the boy wander off while she spoke on her phone. My parents always kept a close eye on me and my brothers whenever we rode a bus, but this stupid young woman was just the opposite. I was appalled. But then she let the kid climb the stairs by himself.

Of course, as difficult as it was, I knew I better not say anything. But then the inevitable happened: there was a series of loud thuds as the little boy fell down the stairs. I’m not sure how , but luckily the kid was unhurt. Frankly I found it remarkable that it didn’t send the three of them straight to hospital. I couldn’t resist letting out a loud exclamation; it shocked me enough to instantly decide that it warranted blogging about. Again, I know I’m not a parent and have very little experience of looking after children; but, with so many more inexperienced parents around all of a sudden, I really wish such young parents knew how to look after their children a bit more.
