Project Hail Mary

I’m still very partial to science fiction of course, and I’m happy to report I went to see Project Hail Mary with Dominik yesterday afternoon. It is a very interesting film which I couldn’t resist thinking owed quite a bit to Red Dwarf. It was essentially about a lone man lost in space whose crew had all died. I would even go so far that some of the robots even recalled scutters, leaving me wondering whether the reference was deliberate or not. To be honest I couldn’t quite work out whether the film wanted to be taken seriously, or wanted to be seen as a lighthearted comedy. At times it seemed like a children’s film, but also touched on deep philosophical themes such as communication. Even so, it is a film which is certainly worth going to see: the photography is truly spectacular, the acting by Ryan Gosling is heartfelt and earnest. While I left the cinema with a few questions on my mind, searching for an underlying moral to the story, it is nonetheless a film which reassured me that the cinematic arts are alive and well.
