Just when I was starting to feel like I had begun to get to know this incredible metropolis, after today it once again feels totally alien. Dominik invited me to join him on an expedition to Kingston: he was planning to meet some friends on an island in the Thames there, Trowlock Island. Of course I was immediately intrigued, never having ventured that far into West London, and not having realised that the Thames actually had any islands in it. What followed was an incredible day of discovery, exploration and happy meetings of the kind I love the most. An afternoon of following paths I had never been down, and getting to know a part of London which felt completely different to the one I knew. To be honest it let me feel the surge of excitement and wonder I always seem to get when exploring somewhere completely new, even though I was technically still well within my home city. Above all, it made me realise how little I know of that pretty part of west London, where the Thames is far narrower, more tranquil and picturesque. Now I know how to get there though, I’ll almost certainly be heading back.
