Having just got in from quite an interesting afternoon in itself trundling around The City and Barbican, I got home and happened upon this extremely interesting video from TfL. I instantly knew I’d need to link to it here, as it is about all the films which have been made on the tube network. Of course, I use the tube fairly often these days – or at least the accessible parts of it – but when you look at it, it’s incredibly iconic. It has been used in films ranging from Skyfall to Transformers. Canary Wharf station was even apparently used in a Star Wars film, doubling as the interior of the Death Star. What I found especially interesting, though, was how disused stations such as Aldwych are being used for historic films: those old stations are so evocative of a bygone London, it’s great to see them being made the most of, rather than just being forgotten about.
Mind you, one thing I did raise an eyebrow over was the fact that TfL actually has a dedicated ‘Film office’. Had anyone else heard of that? So much for sleek, cost-effective public bodies. Then again, maybe I should try to get in touch with them.
