All that I have to say this morning is that it’s good to see America back: a glimpse of the sensible, sane US which we once knew, which wasn’t careering over a precipice into outright fascism. By all accounts, Donald Trump took a hefty thumping last night, and it was quite a relief to get up and find that the polls hadn’t been cataclysmically wrong again. Yet the fact remains that America is still a deeply divided nation. From what I’ve been hearing, both online and from people I speak to in person, the amount of political animosity there is absolutely chilling. We may see Trump as the vile charlatan he is, and it’s good to see that not everyone in America is oblivious to that; but what worries me is that he’s only a figurehead, and that the appalling reactionary conservatism which we now tend to associate with the MAGA movement goes far, far deeper. Even if and when Trump is removed from office, it might not be the end of the issue as even more right wing monsters could just take his place. Thus, while this morning we might breathe a slight sigh of relief (and I note the scumbag is already trying to claim that this vote wasn’t a verdict on him, after all), I’m concerned that it might not be time to restore our confidence and respect for the United States just yet.
